Baseball and Tennis Win - Softball Falters

WCHL News

Several Tar Heel sports were in action Wednesday.

BASEBALL

The baseball team picked up another win with an 8-2 victory against St John’s. Ben Bunting and Tommy Coyle each added three hits and two RBI for the Heels.

Jimmy Messer earned his first victory of the season and the third of his career after pitching five innings. He allowed two runs, six hits and struck out three batters.

UNC improves to 11-2 on the season and takes on Duke in a weekend series starting at 6 p.m. Friday.

SOFTBALL

The softball team saved its toughest opponent for last on its spring break west coast road trip.

After 15 straight wins the Heels finally faltered in a defensive battle against 6th-ranked UCLA. Carolina could only muster one hit and although she pitched a great game, Danielle Spaulding gave up a solo home run. 18th-ranked UNC lost 1-0 and falls to 16-4 on the season.

Carolina will look to start its winning streak again this Saturday in a three-game series with Florida State.

MEN'S TENNIS

The men’s tennis team beat Rice 4-3. The teams split the singles matches with three wins apiece, but Carolina won the doubles point to tip the scale. Carolina improves to 9-2 on year and it’s the third road victory against a ranked opponent this season.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women’s tennis didn’t fare as well against 5th-ranked Florida. The Gators took a bite out of the Heels 6-1. Sophie Grabinski picked up the only win for Carolina. The Tar Heels had a lot to overcome in the first place. Florida carried a 75-match home winning streak into the contest.

Carolina, who climbed to the number one spot in the rankings just a few weeks ago will likely fall to at least fifth in the next released rankings. The Heels do have a chance to impress voters in a match against #9 Baylor at 1 p.m. Saturday.
